Artwork courtesy of Paul Sollosy

Paul R. Sollosy is a true cowboy artist. A native Californian, he spent his youth working on cattle ranches in Utah, Arizona and California. He began cowboying in 1926 in the Simi Valley. He spent these early years watching many of the old vaqueros work cattle and was greatly influenced by their style.  He started sketching on old boot boxes and whatever he could find in the bunkhouse to put down his ideas. Paul indicates that he spent minimal time in an art school in Los Angeles. The instructors told him they could probably not give him what he needed since he spent more time sketching horses on the edges of his papers rather than drawing the models.   Paul ‘knocked’ around a lot and each new job gave him a new aspect for his art work later on. In the 30’s he worked for different saddle shops, Litchenberger-Ferguson, Hollywood Saddlery, Jedlicka’s Saddlery and a stint with F.O. Baird.  Will James was a great influence on Paul’s style of drawing and, encouraged by his mother who got the appointment for him, he traveled to Los Angeles to meet the famous author. With his wife’s full support, Paul began a full-time career in western art in 1967 and moved to Scottsdale, Arizona to put down roots there and draw and paint full-time.  Paul rode most of his life all the way up to the age of 86. He and Ernie Morris are great friends and both of these fine artists continue to keep the real vaquero traditions alive with their art work.  Now in his 90’s, Paul is in good health and continues to paint and sketch on a daily basis. He participates in the High Noon Show and the Santa Inez Gear Show.  We appreciate Paul's generosity in allowing us to share his artwork on our event's posters.
